Monroeville, Alabama: A closer look at Harper Lee’s Hometown

Ol’ Curiosities & Book Shoppe: A new chapter in an old book

This was the most challenging assignment I’ve ever had. My professor wanted me to go completely out of my comfort zone for our final project, a two-part profile on a town in Alabama. Despite the tight deadline, I made six visits to Monroeville, Alabama, and interviewed as many people willing to talk about Nelle Harper Lee and her book’s legacy. I enjoyed getting to know complete strangers and realized slice of life stories, personality profiles, and community journalism are areas I enjoy writing about. I was sad as the deadline approached and my time in the town ended but grateful for the opportunity.

Multimedia Journalism/Digital Storytelling

Auburn’s Farm to Table Movement

This semester-long endeavor allowed me to build a website, add interactive elements and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Several rounds of interviews with farmers, local businesses and restaurant owners in the Auburn area expanded into videos, soundbites, interactive maps, galleries and other multimedia elements.  Throughout the semester, I met short deadlines, edited film and took photos/video on a Nikon.

Color Story/Profile

Red Clay Brewery: Craft Beers & Board Games

Going behind the scenes and learning about this industry introduced me to color stories. I learned not just about the business but also its impact on the town. I would love to a follow-up piece on this business now that they’ve celebrated their first anniversary.
